Elizabeth line 24-hour strike begins on New Year’s Eve over pay and conditions

Transport workers on the Elizabeth line will strike on New Year’s Eve amid a dispute over pay and conditions. Two unions – the Rail, Rail for London Infrastructure (RFLI) and Maritime and Transport (RMT) union – have announced separate walkouts set to affect passengers throughout today and tomorrow (Wednesday, January 1).

RFLI workers began their 24-hour strike at 6am this morning over claims of unsafe rostering, pay progression delays, and safety concerns. Control room staff represented by the RMT will also strike for 24 hours from 9pm this evening.

Members recently voted to reject the latest pay offer. The union is demanding improved holiday entitlements and reductions in working hours.

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch said: “These disputes highlight the refusal of employers to address legitimate concerns about pay, working hours, and safety. Our members are standing firm for fair treatment, and the companies must come to the table with serious offers to resolve these issues.”

A London Underground strike set to take place in November was called off by the RMT and train drivers’ union ASLEF after receiving an improved offer. A Transport for London spokesperson said it was “fair, affordable, good for our colleagues and good news for London”.

People travelling around London could also face disruption on other services due to planned improvement works. Liverpool Street – London’s busiest station – will remain shut until Thursday, January 2, while the London Overground is also suspended from Liverpool Street to London Fields.
