Escape to the Country viewers say ‘read the room’ as Steps star tours million pound homes

Viewers of Escape to the Country left several viewers bemused as they begged the BBC to “read the room”.

Presenter Denise Nurse was back on the BBC One show as she assisted Steps singer Ian ‘H’ Watkins and his partner Tom with their potential move to Wales in Monday’s celebrity special (December 30).

The celebrity couple visited four properties across South Wales as Denise mused what their futures could look like if they were to make the big move to the Welsh countryside.

Despite the grand properties that were on offer, fans were left unsettled by the four homes, which all had a million-pound price tag attached to them.

Heading straight to the social media site X, fans shared their grievances over the high-offer properties.

A fourth added: “Who on earth thought it would be a good idea during tough economic times to come up with a program where H from Steps looks at £1.5 million properties?! Snobbery and elitism at its finest!”

While another fan shared: “These Christmas #escapetothecountry episodes somehow leave a bad taste.”

However, some fans were happy to see H make the big move to Wales. One viewer wrote: “It’s the best place to live! We love it!”

The expensive homes left fans unsettled

At the end of the episode, Denise sat down with H and Tom to find out what they thought of the search and whether they were considering making an offer on any of the houses.

But H explained that there was still plenty to think about before he could put his money on the table.

He said: “I love that we’ve seen lots of ideas that we can recreate, I loved your mystery house. There is a lot to think about!”
