Exactly when £25 Cold Weather Payments will enter bank accounts amid freezing Arctic blast

It’s been a freezing cold start to 2025. And when the weather gets so cold over a certain period, the Government pays out money to some households to help them keep their homes warm. It’s a time when there are concerns over the health of the poorest and most vulnerable who may be living in cold homes because they can’t afford to heat them.

But exactly when will Cold Weather Payments be issued by the Government. Payments of £25 are given out for every seven day period of very cold weather. This is when average temperatures are 0C over a seven-day period in a particular area.

Temperatures are recorded at a local level, so residents in some villages, towns and cities may get cash while others will not. The emergency support is aimed at the worst off.

So eligible households include those on Pension Credit, Universal Credit and Income Support as well as certain other benefits. It appears likely Cold Weather Payments will be triggered in some areas of the UK with conditions to remain bitterly cold into next week.

On some days, daytime temperatures will struggle to climb above 1C or 2C. The Government says: “You may get Cold Weather Payments if you’re getting certain benefits or Support for Mortgage Interest. If you’re eligible, you’ll get these payments automatically. You do not need to apply, but you may need to tell Jobcentre Plus if you have a baby or if a child under five comes to live with you.

“The payments do not affect your other benefits. You’ll get a payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over seven consecutive days. You’ll get £25 for each seven-day period of very cold weather between November 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025.”
