Fascism won’t become the norm in
the West – we need to look at the real enemies

Iran, North Korea and to an extent, China are all enemies of Trump’s America, says one reader (Picture: Chip Somodevilla / POOL / AFP via Getty)

‘1920s Germany was a democracy too…’

David Frencel (MetroTalk, Fri) says Donald Trump can’t be a fascist because the US is a democracy.

I would like to remind David that Germany in the 1920s and early 30s was also a democracy. And with enough control over the levers of power (such as perhaps control of both legislative houses and a majority in the Supreme Court) this might not be the case in the US for much longer. What are Trump and Musk to American politics?

Trump and Musk aren’t ‘idealogues’, one reader says (Picture: Tom Brenner for The Washington Post via Getty Images)

‘being narcissist and vindictive doesn’t automatically make you a fascist’I suspect many readers will equate Trump and Elon Musk with holding fascist beliefs without properly understanding what this ideology is.

A fascist is a hyper-nationalist and militarist, usually antisemitic and motivated by belief in dictatorship and racist empire building.

Vladmir Putin is a good example of this, as he attempts to exterminate Ukraine. Iran, North Korea and to an extent, China, are all fascist countries and, it should be noted, are enemies of Trump’s America.

Right-wing politics is the new norm in the West because nobody is able to stop mass immigration. It is not rocket science.

The Labour government is an outlier, with few friends abroad.

Trump is not an ideologue, that would be too much effort for him, he is a conservative and a popularist who thinks that war is bad for business and lower prices benefit the working person. No wonder he is popular.

He has no interest in turning Greenland or Panama into Little Americas, he just doesn’t want Russia or China to have strategic control over them. His loose talking style is that of an elderly man who is able to hide his diminishing energy more successfully than his predecessor. However, being a narcissist and vindictive does not automatically make you a fascist.

Much the same applies to Musk. He is emotionally immature with poor social skills but he also happens to be the greatest industrialist so far of the 21st century and has enriched himself by his own efforts.

A Russian oligarch he is not and fascism will not become the norm in
the West.

People need to look at the real enemies of the West – because they are looking at us. Chris Shepherd, London

Are the UK’s right-wing politicians out for their own gain?

‘Labour may not be perfect they’re trying to do the best for the country’It was heartening to read MetroTalk on Wednesday and see that most people in the UK are aware of the dangers posed by Trump and his acolytes.

Hopefully it makes everyone realise that the right wing here is heading in the same direction with Reform and parts of the Tories. Labour may not be perfect but at least they are trying to do the best for the country and not themselves. John Lewis Coulsdon

Who’s responsible for Trump’s return?

A reader says the liberal left only have themselves to blame for Trump’s second term (Picture: Win McNamee/Getty Images)

To all the liberal lefties whining about Trump’s return to power, it must be pointed out that he was elected to deal with the problems caused by your policies: open borders, mass immigration, cancel culture, an epidemic of drugs…

Every major city in the US suffers from unprecedented levels of serious crime and they are mostly run by left-wing Democrats!

Did you woke liberals really think that most people wanted all this madness? Alan, Coventry

Nick Smith (MetroTalk, Fri)
clearly has his idea of patriotism mixed up when he calls for Trump, a foreign leader, coming to the UK and being vocal in his condemnation of this government.

Nick, if you love Donald Trump so much, go live in the US. Steve, Camberley
