Flood water turning to ice in fresh peril for Gloucestershire

Flood water around Tewkesbury has frozen over as temperatures plunge below freezing. Heavy rain and snow melt, followed by sub-zero conditions in the cold weather, has caused fresh dangers in the area.

Flood warnings remain in force on parts of the River Severn and a number of roads in the Tewkesbury and Gloucester area remain closed this evening (Friday, January 10). This includes the Maisemore stretch of the A417 north of the city.

In a message on X, Tewkesbury Borough Council said: “Just a quick reminder about the dangers of frozen water. Some of the flood water in our borough has frozen over – don’t be tempted to walk on it.

“It’s impossible to tell how firm the ice is and it can be incredibly dangerous. Please stay safe and have a great weekend.”

In its latest update for the River Severn at Severn Ham, Tewkesbury, the Environment Agency said: “River levels are high but falling at the Mythe Bridge river gauge following heavy rainfall. Consequently, flooding of property, roads and farmland is expected to continue. We expect flooding to affect properties and roads in and around Severn Ham, Tewkesbury.”

The Met Office has temperatures falling to -4C overnight in the Tewkesbury area. Temperatures will remain at 0C or below for most of Saturday, with freezing fog a risk in the county, with milder weather on Sunday.
