Flooding brings delays on major motorways and train lines to start new year

New year, same old British weather. Wind and rain are causing travel disruption in parts of the UK only hours after ringing in 2025.

Britain is set to be battered for the third day running by as much as 100mm of rain and 60mph winds, with two yellow weather warnings and a rare amber alert active. The northern tip of Scotland – including Inverness and Aberdeen – will be dusted by snow and ice today, according to a third yellow weather warning.

The Met Office warnings, on top of more than 120 flood warnings, mean one thing: delays. And a fair few of them. There are logjams on the M6, M56, A628, among others.

Floodwater has also swamped the railways around Manchester, including East Midlands Railway and TransPenne lines. Likely giving anyone heading into work – or those only just making their way home from the New Year’s celebrations – headaches.
