Our Spanish city guide should help you make the right choice for holidays in the spring and summer of 2025.

Madrid – the sophisticated metropolis

Spain’s capital city has it all: world-renowned museums, beautiful architecture and a thriving culinary scene. LJLA says: “Madrid is arguably one of the most vibrant, lively and exciting cities in Europe. With an abundance of authentic and interesting places to eat, plus plenty of delicious Spanish wine to wash it down, it is the perfect place for foodies to spread their wings and sample all that’s on offer.

“For those who enjoy culture, Madrid will not disappoint. Adorned with striking architecture, you can spend hours exploring the city and learning about the fascinating history of the Spanish capital. For example, as one of the world’s premier art galleries, the Prado Museum, is well worth a visit.

“Dating back to the 17th century, El Retiro Park features beautiful gardens, marble monuments and stunning buildings, making it the ideal spot for a picnic in the sunshine. Meanwhile, sports fans will definitely want to pay a visit to the respective homes of top football teams Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid.” You can fly to Madrid direct from Liverpool John Lennon Airport in 2 hours and 30 minutes, flying with Ryanair.

Barcelona – the cultured seaside city

Barcelona is a magnet for tourists, and with good reason. From strolling down Las Ramblas to lounging on one the city’s beaches, you can forget your troubles in the Catalan capital. LJLA says: “Barcelona is the ideal destination for both sun seekers and city breakers, with an array of things to see and do. How can anyone turn down a trip to a destination with unbeatable cuisine, charming bars, cultural hubs and endless blue skies?

“For those looking for some city centre hustle and bustle, Las Ramblas is packed full of restaurants and bars, but if you want to see some medieval architecture, take a trip to the Barri Gótic (Gothic Quarter). Speaking of architecture, Barcelona is known for spectacular building designs by the likes of Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Motaner – visit Gaudí’s unfinished church of the Sagrada Família, which has been under construction since 1882!

“With 10% of the city covered by parks, it’s a no-brainer to spend some time relaxing outdoors when visiting Barcelona. For impressive surroundings and unbeatable vistas across the city, take the trip up to the Gaudí masterpiece that is Park Güell. Football fans should also check out the FC Barcelona Museum and, of course, Camp Nou.” You can fly to Barcelona direct from Liverpool John Lennon Airport in 2 hours and 30 minutes, flying with easyJet or Ryanair.

Palma de Mallorca – the stylish island capital

The capital of the Balearic island of Majorca, Palma is one of Spain’s more low-key big cities, but has a lot to offer. LJLA says: “Overlooking the gorgeous Mediterranean Sea and with a coast dotted with chic beach clubs, the Spanish island’s capital city of Palma boasts a bustling atmosphere that is truly one of a kind.

“If you’re a lover of Spanish wine and tapas, the island will have you spoilt for choice when it comes to authentic cafes and eateries. Fancy a spot of sightseeing? Go back in time by walking around Palma’s Old Town and marvel in its ancient Roman ruins, or stop by the Gothic cathedral La Seu to feast your eyes upon the jaw-dropping masterpiece.

“Don’t worry if walking isn’t really your thing – there are also plenty of stunning beaches where you can relax and unwind. Meanwhile, Playa de Palma is one of the island’s most popular resorts, boasting stretches of beautiful golden sands.”

Malaga – the partygoer’s paradise

Lively Malaga is the capital of the Costa del Sol and draws sun-worshippers from all over Europe looking for fun and relaxation with a dash of culture thrown in. LJLA says: “Malaga is a superb destination if you want to mix a city break with culture and marine life. The historic centre of Malaga reaches down to the harbour on one side, and is surrounded by mountains on the other. If you’re a lover of art, stop by the Museo Picasso Málaga, while if you’re a history buff, make sure you visit the courtyards and fountains of the 11th century Alcazaba.

“The Costa del Sol is one of the most popular regions of Spain for tourists searching for some sunshine. Marbella is perfect for those looking for some glitz and glamour, while Fuengirola is a lively resort with amazing beaches and a picturesque historic area hidden away if you’re after some peace and tranquillity.
