Foreign Office issues high risk travel warning to Brits over ‘terror threat’

Britons in Brazil have been warned of a high risk of a terrorist attack following two explosions in the capital city, Brasilia. The UK government has urged citizens to “stay aware” of their surroundings due to the threat.

In a statement, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: “There is a high threat of terrorist attacks globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets.”

“Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.”

The warning was issued after two explosions occurred in central Brasilia in November last year. The FCDO said: “Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Brazil. You should exercise caution around major sites in large Brazilian cities.”

Britons have also been advised to be cautious of theft and pickpocketing in areas such as Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, and São Paulo, reports the Express.

Additionally, the FCDO has warned of risks to travellers in river areas near the borders with Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela due to criminal activity, including armed groups, pirates, and drug traffickers. – Along the Amazon River and its tributaries, stretching from west of Codajás to east of Belém do Solimões in Amazonas State.
