Four injured as fire engine on 999 call to rescue horse smashes into car

A fire engine crashed on a 999 call to help rescue a horse trapped in water. Four people were hurt during the collision in Bolton yesterday (Tuesday).

The four casualties were treated at the scene of the crash on Chorley New Road in Horwich, Bolton, following the collision between a fire engine and a car.

Today ((Wednesday) a spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the fire engine was on a 999 call to rescue a horse which was ‘stuck in water’. A replacement engine was scrambled to the distressed horse and helped to rescue the animal, said the spokesman.

Meanwhile two other fire engines were scrambled to the scene of the crash on Chorley New Road. Four people were treated at the scene but did not require hospital treatment.

Four people involved in the smash were assessed by paramedics from North West Ambulance Service. Two fire engines from Bolton Central Community Fire Station and the Enhanced Rescue Unit from Leigh Community Fire Station arrived and worked alongside Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe.

A spokesperson for GMFRS said yesterday: “At around 9.10am this morning (Monday 30 December), firefighters were called to attend a road traffic collision involving a fire engine and a car on Chorley New Road, Bolton.

“Two fire engines from Bolton Central Community Fire Station and the Enhanced Rescue Unit from Leigh Community Fire Station arrived quickly and worked alongside Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe. Four casualties were assessed at the scene by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service.

“Crews were in attendance for approximately one hour and ten minutes.”
