Four symptoms of eye damage and the 20-second rule to reverse it

An optician says a 20-second trick could help save your eyesight as almost half of us are now at risk. Figures show around 44% of people now work from home – which can be a danger for your eyesight.

When working from home, it’s easy to spend hours glued to your screen without a break. No trips to the office coffee machine or chats with colleagues. While this might boost your productivity, it’s potentially disastrous for your vision.

More than 70% of UK adults report symptoms of eye strain from prolonged screen use. These symptoms, known as “digital eyestrain,” include headaches, dry eyes, blurred vision, and irritation.

Optician at HAYDENSWAN Eyecare , Claire Hayden, said an easy hack can reverse the damage – and it takes just 20 seconds.

The average UK adult spends five hours a day glued to their devices – including computer monitors, phones and TVs. For younger adults aged 16-24, screen time is even higher, with women averaging 7.5 hours daily and men clocking up 7 hours, 7 minutes.

“To prevent digital eyestrain, follow the 20-20-20 rule,” Claire advises. “Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to focus on something 20 feet away. This simple habit gives your eyes a much-needed rest, reducing pain and irritation. I often suggest using this time to hydrate or stand up and stretch your legs.”

With more people working remotely than ever before, this quick fix is an easy way to keep your eyes healthy and avoid long-term damage.

So, next time you’re glued to your screen, remember that a little 20-second break could save your sight.
