The New Year honours list has been released today (Monday, December 30) and hundreds of Londoners have been added. We’ve rounded them all up and discovered some notable names like Stephen Fry, Sadiq Khan, Martin Brundle and lots more.
In reaction to being knighted, Mayor Sadiq Khan said he wants to dedicate his OBE to receive the honour. Meanwhile, actor Actor Eddie Marsan from Stepney said he wants to dedicate his OBE to the people of Bethnal Green. Other notable names included former England football manager Gareth Southgate and Happy Valley star Sarah Lancashire
The honours are granted to people who have made a real difference in their community or field. This is the first round of two the King will bestow upon those selected this year. The next will be on his official birthday in June.
Those who are awarded knighthoods or damehoods will be permitted to be called either sir or dame. These are the highest honours that can be given on these occasions. There are also to be new Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) which rank in that order from highest to lowest.
The Companion of the Honour (CMG) was created by King George in 1917 and is recognises people for their outstanding national service, especially in the arts and culture. Other notable holders are Sir David Attenborough and Dame Judi Dench.
The Order of the Bath is an order of chivalry that recognises the service of senior military officers and civil servants and was founded in 1752 by George I.
