Full list of people who don’t have to pay for a TV licence in 2025

For most people living across Wales and the UK, the cost of your TV licence is an annual bill which you have to account for each and every year when setting money aside from your income. It costs £169.50 per year, which you can pay in one go, or spread the cost via direct debit.

But there are four exceptions where people do not have to pay the once-a-year fee. This includes those who are 75 and over and receiving pension credit, and those who are blind, or severely sight impaired.

Other exceptions include people living in qualifying residential care and are disabled or over 60 and retired, or businesses that provide units of overnight accommodation, for example, hotels and mobile units. For the latest TV & Showbiz news, sign up to our newsletter.

The TV Licensing website states as follows: “The TV Licence fee and any concessions are set in law by the Government. There are concessions available for people who are aged 75 or over and receive pension credit, people who are blind (severely sight impaired), people who live in qualifying residential care and are disabled or over 60 and retired, for businesses that provide units of overnight accommodation, for example, hotels and mobile units. There are no other concessions available.”

Hospitality businesses can apply for a licence to cover guest accommodation or mobile units (hotels, hostels, mobile units and campsites). Licences are also available for entertainment venues (such as corporate boxes or sports stadiums). The licence cost will depend on the number of units or rooms where a licence is needed.
