Schools across Lancashire are again urging children to stay home as the cold snap continues.
The region has seen a significant drop in temperatures this week, with snow and icy conditions prevalent. A yellow weather warning for ice is currently in effect across parts of the county until 10am this morning (January 10), including Ormskirk, Skelmersdale and Burscough in West Lancashire.
Temperatures will continue to fall over the coming days, with the mercury potentially reaching minus 20C in northern parts of the UK on Friday night, the Met Office has forecast. Meteorologist Liam Eslick said: “It’s going to be another cold couple of days, and recovering into the early part of next week.
“Anywhere across the UK is likely to see those temperatures dipping below freezing and likely to see quite severe frost and ice to form overnight tonight.”
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has extended its cold weather health alert for all of England until Sunday. Amber alerts have been extended and will now run until January 12, meaning a rise in deaths is likely, the agency said.
Residents are being advised to exercise caution on icy surfaces along many roads and pavements. Throughout this week, dozens schools have had to close their doors on certain days due to the icy conditions causing boiler and heating issues.
Other schools have been unable to ensure their grounds are safe for students and staff. Several schools have already confirmed they will remain closed with online learning available for many of the pupils asked to stay at home.
