Gladiators stars Fury and Phantom hint at ‘exciting new game’ in upcoming BBC series

Gladiators is set to make a thrilling comeback on BBC One with its second series launching on 18 January. The iconic TV show, which was revived in 2024, has been captivating audiences anew with a fresh roster of Gladiators.

Among the standout stars are Phantom, whose real name is Toby Olubi, and Fury, known off-screen as Jodie Ounsley. The pair recently gave viewers a sneak peek into what’s in store for the upcoming series.

Joining Roger Johnson and Sarah Campbell on BBC Breakfast, they discussed the latest developments in the world of Gladiators, with Phantom teasing the introduction of an “new game” that ranks as one of his top picks.

“We’ve also got a new game coming,” Phantom revealed to the presenters. “Which is definitely up there as one of my favourites.”

When Sarah probed whether the new feature was dubbed “unleash” both Phantom and Fury remained tight-lipped. He playfully responded: “You’ll have to wait and see! ” while Fury chimed in with: “Phantom is good at it!”

The revamped gameshow, helmed by the dynamic duo of Bradley Walsh and his son Barney Walsh, is set to return this weekend. The first episode will air at 5:50 p.m on Saturday, with subsequent episodes rolling out weekly, reports the Mirror.

Fans can look forward to seeing their favourite Gladiators back in action, including Sabre, Legend, Diamond, Phantom, Athena, Bionic, Giant, Dynamite, Comet, Viper, Electro, Apollo, Fury, Steel, and Fire, the latter having made a splash on the recent season of Strictly Come D ancing.

Two fresh faces are poised to join the existing team of Gladiators, with their identities remaining a closely guarded secret at present. However, fans will have to make do without Nitro, also known as Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, after an unfortunate training injury has relegated him to the sidelines this season.

In addition to introducing new Gladiators, the latest series promises thrilling new challenges, among which is the return of Atlaspheres, a much-loved classic from the original show in the 90s. Competitors and Gladiators will climb inside immense metallic spheres, with contenders trying to manoeuvre themselves across specific points to accrue points, all whilst evading the chasing Gladiators.

Bradley, full of enthusiasm, shared: “The new series is just fantastic, the Gladiators mean business and they are back tougher than before!” He also disclosed that contenders’ helmets will be equipped with cameras, offering viewers a first-person perspective of the daunting experience of facing off with the Gladiators.

Gladiators season two premieres at 5:50pm tonight (January 18) on BBC One, with new episodes airing weekly.
