A GP surgery has been forced to close following a serious incident in south Manchester. Oswald Road is taped off in Chorlton following a ‘robbery’ which left a man seriously injured.
Police have arrested a 46-year-old man on suspicion of assault, in connection with the incident on Sunday night (December 29). A cordon remains in place in the area this morning (Monday), with Greater Manchester Police ‘working to establish the full circumstances’ of what took place. Follow live updates from the scene here
Patients signed up with the Chorlton Family Practice, also known as Chorlton Health Centre, have been told the surgery is closed today due to the ongoing police incident. In a text seen by the Manchester Evening News, patients have been told that police ‘will not allow’ access to the site for either staff or patients.
A telephone service is in use for patients who need the GP in an emergency, with the Oswald Road practice asking people to consider getting in touch later in the week if possible. A message sent to residents by GMP says some patients are being sent to Corkland Road Medical Practice instead.
A post on Chorlton Family Practice Facebook page said: “URGENT… due to an incident outside Chorlton Family Practice the police are not allowing access to the surgery for staff or patients. You can still ring the surgery as normal but services will be limited today. We will update you as we get more information.”

In a statement to the MEN, the practice said: ” Chorlton Family Practice at 1 Nicolas Road is not open due to the police incident however we have messaged all of our patients and are still seeing those patients booked in at our branch site at Corkland Road.
“All of our staff have moved to Corkland Road and our GPs continue to triage patients who need assistance. “We have contingency plans for tomorrow and will remain at Corkland Road with the possibility of seeing patients at practices close by if the situation continues, however, we understand from the police that the road should be open from 4pm and expect to be back at the practice at Chorlton Family Practice tomorrow.”
They also pointed out that patients who use the Health Centre on Nicolas Road will be contacted by NHS Health Centre staff.
The GMP message, sent on the Bee in the Loop service, added: “Nicolas Road, close to Chorlton Health Centre, is likely to be closed for the rest of the day (30/12/2024) following a police incident. Patients from Chorlton Health Centre are currently being diverted to Corkland Road Medical Practice.”
Emergency services were called out to the scene at around 7.50pm yesterday. Residents have been told to expect a continuing police presence today.
A GMP spokesman said: “Officers are currently responding to a reported robbery on Nicolas Road, Chorlton, where a man has suffered serious injuries. He has been taken to hospital by our Ambulance Service colleagues.

“Those in the local area will see a large emergency service presence, which could continue for some time as we work to establish the full circumstances of what has happened. Officers are also speaking to those out and about, and we would encourage any witnesses or anyone who may have information about what has occurred to come forward to us.
“You can also speak to those on the ground if you have any concerns. A 46-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in custody for questioning.”
