Grim reason why you should never use cotton buds to clean your ears

Many of us have likely reached for cotton buds to clean our ears, thinking they’re perfectly shaped for the task and feeling the need to clear out any discomfort. However, these seemingly harmless tools are not recommended for ear cleaning.

ITV’s Dr Amir Khan has warned against their use in a straightforward Instagram video. As a medical professional, he confesses that he never uses them for his ears due to the health risks they pose.

He shared: “Honestly the number of perforated ear drums I’ve seen, and the number of broken cotton bud tips I’ve had to fish out of my patients ears – it’s not worth it! ” He further advised: “Cotton bud sticks are not for your ears and they’re terrible for the environment. I know it might feel satisfying, but you could be doing more harm than good! “.

Dr Khan also highlighted the crucial role earwax plays in maintaining ear health, keeping them free from bacteria and functioning properly. In most instances, he reassured that our ears can manage wax levels on their own, negating the need for intervention.

Only when wax causes an obstruction should it be removed. For those times when earwax does need a bit of assistance, Dr Khan suggests using olive oil drops to soften it, reports Surrey Live. In severe cases, professional healthcare assistance may be required to safely remove the wax build-up.

A medical expert has caused quite the stir online after he shared a video warning about the improper use of cotton buds for ear cleaning. He explained that contrary to popular belief, cotton buds can actually push wax deeper into the ear, potentially causing blockage or even damaging the eardrum.

The clip has garnered over 4,000 views and prompted a flurry of comments from viewers. Opinions varied, with some expressing shock at the revelation.

One individual commented: “Thanks so much Amir – as always your advice is invaluable. I’ve never used cotton buds. I’d be terrified a piece came off in my ear. I do occasionally use olive oil drops though.”

Another shared their professional experience, saying: “As an Ent nurse practitioner, I have seen endless trauma to ear canals from the use of cotton buds. I have removed many tips of buds that have got stuck in canals. Plus, whatever wax people think they get out the rest they push deep into the canals and it compacts.”

And yet another remarked on the lack of general knowledge about proper ear care: “Amazing the amount of people who don’t know how to clean their ears, clearly something that needs to be taught. Warm water is all that’s needed.”
