‘Gutted’ Macy Gray’s reason for storming off The Masked Singer revealed

Viewers of The Masked Singer UK were left in suspense on Saturday evening as the character Toad In The Hole was revealed to be American singer Macy Gray. All characters, including Bear, Pufferfish, Bush, and Bear, gave their performances, but sadly, one had to leave the show.

This turned out to be Toad, who, as per the show’s tradition, had to unmask and reveal their identity.

However, before Macy’s identity was disclosed, she exited the stage when host Joel Dommett announced the unfortunate news of her departure. Viewers at home were taken aback, and shortly after, the star returned to the stage, revealing herself to be Macy, who seemed less than pleased about her exit from the reality show.

A source has now claimed that Macy was simply “blindsided” by being one of the first to leave The Masked Singer, especially after reaching the final of the US version as Sea Queen in 2023. The insider suggested she was initially “almost shellshocked to start with” and quickly became “gutted to be out so early because she really enjoyed being on the American version – when obviously she did brilliantly – so was totally blindsided.”

Speaking to The Sun, they claimed: “It was the shock of it for her as well as the upset and in that moment she had a very raw, human reaction and wanted out. For a professional performer to reach that point shows how badly she felt.”

The source also claimed that it took the people backstage a while to ‘talk her round’, reports the Mirror.

Reach has approached the star’s representatives and ITV for a statement. As Macy made her less-than-thrilled return to the stage, social media lit up with viewers sharing their thoughts on the uncomfortable incident.

One viewer posted: “Well that was awkward… #maskedsingeruk.”

Another stated: “Wow is Macy Gray really that heartbroken that she’s been kicked off Masked Singer”, while someone else remarked: “Oh everyone looks so awkward. She walked off stage. cannot deal #maskedsingeruk #maskedsinger.”

Someone else commented: “Did anyone else feel awkward watching the last few minutes of that .. Macy Gray pls #maskedsingeruk.”

The panel had strongly suspected that Toad in the Hole was none other than Macy Gray, who gave a rendition of Boney M’s classic ‘Sunny’ on the programme, leading to their collective decision to eliminate her instead of Bear, the show’s other at-risk contestant required to perform again for survival.

When host Joel Dommett, 39, enquired whether she enjoyed her stint on the show, Macy Gray, famed for her hit ‘Sweet Baby’, replied simply with: “Yeah”. Panel member Jonathan Ross then politely made light of Joel’s choice of shorts, as the presenter expressed his gratitude for Macy’s participation in the show.

Macy, aged 57, graced the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival in both 2000 and 2003, and is celebrated for hits like ‘I Try’, which clinched the best female pop vocal performance Grammy in 2001. Earlier on the show, she delivered a rendition of ‘Sunny’ by Bobby Hebb, leading panellist Mo Gilligan to speculate that the voice might belong to Tracy Chapman.

Dressed in Shakespearean garb, Macy performed ‘Miami’ by Will Smith, while the character Bush gave a rendition of Jess Glynne’s ‘Hold My Hand’.

In other news, the show’s latest addition to the panel, Maya Jama, was captivated by Pufferfish’s rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’, describing it as “stunning”. Wolf took to the stage with Barry Manilow’s ‘Copacabana (At the Copa)’, prompting special guest Suranne Jones to suggest Spandau Ballet’s Tony Hadley might be behind the mask, whereas Davina McCall’s guess was Duran Duran’s frontman Simon Le Bon.

Following performances by Wolf, Bush, and Pufferfish, Bear and Toad In The Hole faced off once more. Bear’s take on ‘Stay’ by The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber was met with applause, while Toad In The Hole opted for Roxette’s ‘It Must Have Been Love’.

The panel decided to keep Bear in the competition. The previous weekend had seen Sir Mo Farah unveiled as the celebrity beneath the host Joel costume.

The Masked Singer will return next Saturday at 7pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
