Heart West Midlands drivetime host Ed James has thanked listeners for their support after news broke that media company Global would be dropping regional and local shows in England. Industry publication Radio Today reported yesterday (Thursday, January 9) that the media company would be adopting a new Nations Strategy, eliminating regional and local shows on Heart, Smooth and Capital stations.
While Global is yet to confirm what this means for the region, a spokesperson did tell BirminghamLive: “We are indeed making some changes today and we will announce more details in due course.”
Listeners of the local DJs impacted by the report have rushed to support the hosts as the story unfolds. It includes Ed James, who has hosted shows on Heart for more than two decades.

“Radio is the best job in the world and Brum and the West Midlands is the best place… it’s genuinely been an incredible privilege and one which I’ve never taken for granted. Will be forever grateful to Global for the opportunity.
“Thinking of some awesome friends and colleagues at the moment and sending love to anyone who needs it. Life is amazing. Let’s be grateful, have fun and stay positive. Wishing you a brilliant Friday and a great first proper weekend of 2025!”
