High cholesterol symptoms in the legs that ‘should be seen to immediately’

Cholesterol is essential for our health, aiding in hormone production and building cell membranes. Yet, high levels of “bad” cholesterol, or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, can be a serious health hazard.

This type of cholesterol can cling to artery walls, raising the risk of blockages that may lead to heart attacks. Often, the first sign of trouble is a life-threatening heart attack or stroke.

Blockages can also cause Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), often in the legs. The Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) points out that PAD might not always show physical symptoms, but there are signs to look out for.

“Although there may be no physical signs at all, there are some symptoms that have been noted to occur with PAD,” CIS states. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare provider promptly.

It’s important to remember that many people with high cholesterol won’t show symptoms initially. A blood test is the only way to confirm high cholesterol levels.

If diagnosed, lifestyle changes and possibly medication will be recommended.

Those grappling with high cholesterol could see improvements by incorporating more fruits and vegetables into their diet, while cutting back on fatty fried foods like chips, bacon, and sausages. The NHS also emphasises the importance of regular exercise, suggesting a target of at least 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly.
