Holyhead to Dublin ferry sailings to restart on Thursday as port reopens

Holyhead port will reopen on Thursday with a full timetable of sailings due to get underway shortly after weeks of closures. All ferry services at the North Wales port, owned by Stena Line, were cancelled before the Christmas period after damage during Storm Darragh in early December.

Terminal 3 was badly damaged in the incident with a video clip showing the collapse of the ‘dolphin’ platform which it is understood occurred as the Irish Ferries vessel Ulysses was leaving the berth. A dolphin is a structure that is used to guide, berth, or moor ships at a port, dock, or jetty.

This also saw the adjacent Terminal 5 berth closed but that will reopen from tomorrow. Terminal 3 will remain closed until repairs are completed.

A full timetable of eight sailings in each direction has been announced although it is understood annual maintenance of an Irish Ferries vessel will see six sailings in the first few days after reopening. These will all be using Terminal 5. The first vessel to depart Holyhead will be Irish Ferries’ WB Yeats at 1.30am on Thursday.

Once fully up and running Irish Ferries will have departures at 1.30am, 7.30am, 3.15pm and 7.30pm and they directed passengers to their website for updates.

Stena Line said: “Stena Line currently plans to operate four daily sailings ex Holyhead at 04:00hrs, 10:00hrs, 16:00hrs and 22.15hrs from 16th January to 28th February. Beyond this date, the schedule will be updated accordingly if needed when the timeline for a return to a two-berth operation at Holyhead becomes clear. We are currently in the process of contacting affected customers.”
