Home above Exeter shop on market for eye-watering sum

A home in one of Exeter’s most historic buildings has gone on the market for £1.5million. It is located above a city centre shop and has a striking view of the Cathedral.

The two-bedroom home can be found inside Mol’s Coffee House, a 16th century building that has served many different function over the years. It was initially constructed to house priests and went on to become the city’s Custom House. The building then had various retail uses, before becoming a coffee house in the early 18th century.

After the coffee house closed around 1830, the building was used as two different galleries, a stationers, a jewellers, a boutique gift shop and a leather goods store. Last year, the ground floor was snapped up by The Whisky Shop, which says it is “the largest specialist retailer of whisky in the UK”.

The upper three floors of the Grade I listed building have recently been converted into a home, which is being marketed for sale by Knight Frank estate agents.

The property offers two bedrooms, two bathrooms and two reception rooms, with a mix of historic and modern features. One of the reception rooms boasts a stately fireplace, window seats and oak-panelled walls, with coats of arms of Devon nobility.

On the top floor, the kitchen and living area has windows on all four sides, including ones which directly overlook the Cathedral, in addition to its very own balcony.

In its advertisement, Knight Frank describes the home as “one of the best residential addresses in Exeter” and says residents will be among the few people to “have had the rare privilege of waking each day to an uninterrupted, south-facing view of Exeter Cathedral”.
