Homes and cars submerged in floodwater as canal ‘bursts its banks’

An amber warning covering parts of the North West of England remains in place, with heavy rain, wind and flooding predicted

West End Road, St Helens

Houses and cars were submerged in “several feet” of floodwater after the Sankey Canal in St Helens “burst its banks” amid heavy downpours. The junction of Blackbrook Road and West End Road was cordoned off by fire crews this morning as water poured into the streets.

A yellow weather warning for rain was put in place for parts of Merseyside at 3pm yesterday, with downpours continuing through the night. An amber warning covering parts of the North West of England remains in place, with heavy rain, wind and flooding predicted.

More than 130 flood warnings are in place across the UK, which could see “fast flowing or deep floodwater” resulting in “danger to life”. Road closures due to flooding remain in place in Merseyside, including the M57, M6, A58 in Haydock, Brookfield Drive and Lower Lane in Fazakerley, and Peasley Cross Road in St Helens.
