A Liverpool house destroyed by a fire that led to a man being pulled from the flames and hospitalised is to be reconstructed and turned into new apartments. In April 2023, a man was rescued from a property on Arundel Avenue near Sefton Park after the property’s roof collapsed.

After the blaze broke out, Merseyside Fire and Rescue confirmed a man was later taken to hospital for treatment for “slight smoke inhalation.” Neighbours told the ECHO they heard what sounded like a “massive truck crashing” before smoke started to pour from the roof of the two-storey property.

Such is the damage at 51 Arundel Avenue, plans have been submitted to Liverpool Council to reattach the roof and convert it into a pair of apartments. Both 49 and 51 are semi-detached homes constructed more than a century ago, forming a terrace of three with an adjoining property which dates back to 1890.

Documents set out how the fire left the homes uninhabitable but number 49 has since been restored to its previous condition and is once again occupied. A planning statement attached to the application submitted by A&I Property said the flames led to the total loss of the roof structure, partial collapse of the front and rear elevations and extensive internal and external damage to the fabric of the building including the staircases, floors, windows and doors.

Work has begun to strip out the fire damage from number 51 with planning permission sought to install a new roof, windows and doors, repointing and upgrades to rainwater goods. The application added: “As the building is no longer suitable for continued use as a family dwelling, the proposals to reinstate the building are submitted in conjunction with a change of use to three-bedroom and five bedroom apartments.”

At the time of the fire, crews spent remained on scene for a number of hours checking for hotspots with thermal imaging cameras and making the scene safe before leaving. A date for the plans to be considered is yet to be confirmed.
