How the West Midlands looked in 1984 – 40 years ago

The mid-80s were a time of significant change for Birmingham, with 1984 standing out as a particularly eventful year. The city welcomed two Queens – one being Her Majesty who opened the new terminal at birmingham -airport>Birmingham Airport, and the other being rock royalty Freddie Mercury and Brian May, who graced the stage at the NEC.

That same year, we saw the launch of the Maglev at Birmingham Airport, and our theatre scene was rejuvenated with a refurbished venue. However, it wasn’t all good news, as a major landmark was tragically destroyed by fire.

Music lovers were treated to performances from big names like Neil Diamond, UB40 at their peak, and a youthful Elton John. On the sweeter side of things, Cadbury introduced the Wispa chocolate bar, promoted by Hi-di-Hi stars Ruth Madoc and Simon Cadell, popular figures from a top Sunday night sitcom of the era.

It was also a time when local talents Lenny Henry and Jasper Carrott were making waves in comedy, Doug Ellis chaired Aston Villa, and the Super Prix was the talk of the town.

However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. The miners’ strikes made headlines and had a significant impact across the Midlands, especially in neighbouring Staffordshire and Warwickshire.
