Huge update after Dobbies near M5 closed last month

The former Dobbies Gloucester Garden Centre just off junction 12 of the M5 has been bought by British Garden Centres. The acquisition of the business has been announced today and is expected to open late February.

The Gloucester store, in Bath Road, near Haresfield, will join the British Garden Centres family following the Dobbies Restructuring Plan (RP). The immediate priority is to restock and reopen the centre as soon as possible.

British Garden Centres will be retaining the existing centre team and look forward to working with them to ensure the continued success of the Gloucester community it serves. This move marks a significant milestone for the business, further solidifying its position as the UK’s largest family-run garden centre group in the UK, taking the portfolio to 67 stores.

Founder and Director of British Garden Centres, Charles Stubbs, said: “We are delighted to be adding the Gloucester store to our business and build on the foundations to grow the centre, so it continues to thrive. This is a significant moment for British Garden Centres as the acquisition of the former Dobbies Gloucester cements our position as the largest garden centre group by stores in the UK.

“We are thrilled to be part of the local community and look forward to welcoming back customers and meeting new ones as we drive Gloucester Garden Centre forward.”

British Garden Centres (BGC) is the UK’s largest family-owned garden centre group with 67 centres around the country. The group is owned and led by The Stubbs family, who also own and operate Woodthorpe Leisure Park in Lincolnshire.

Gloucester Garden Centre will be looking to recruit extra roles so job vacancies will be posted on the British Garden Centres website. For other updates on the centre and opening please keep an eye on Gloucester Garden Centre’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

BGC was launched in 1987 with the opening of Woodthorpe Garden Centre by brothers Charles and Robert Stubbs. Since 2018 it has expanded rapidly with the acquisition of 50 garden centres allowing it to grow from its heartland to the business it is now with 67 garden centres spread from Carmarthen to Ramsgate, Wimborne to East Durham.

The group has a team of 2,700 colleagues working across the garden centres, restaurants, growing nurseries, distribution centres, Woodthorpe Leisure Park, and Woody’s Restaurant & Bar.

The Dobbies store shut for the last time on Sunday, December 15). The garden centre, in Bath Road, Haresfield, near Stonehouse, had been earmarked for closure under a restructuring plan.

A message to customers on its website reads: “A huge thank you to all of our customers for your support from everyone at Dobbies Gloucester. Your nearest store is Dobbies Tewkesbury or shop online at dobbies.com.”

It wasn’t just people looking for plants that visited Dobbies Gloucester, which used to be called Blooms. It was popular with young children who enjoyed the soft play as well as others who enjoyed a bite to eat and a drink in the restaurant.

A Little Dobbies in Cheltenham’s Promenade has already closed. As the message above says, the Tewkesbury Dobbies, just off the M5 junction nine, remains very much open.
