A father has questioned whether there were rules regarding how he spends the cash he received from his Universal Credit claim. The dad explained that his family lived outside of the UK and he often sent them some money to support them.
But he was now worried whether the Department of Work and Pensions would have issue with this. Taking to Reddit he said: “I have a wife and young son abroad. Every few months I send some money to help them cover their costs.
“Am I allowed to do this with my Universal Credit funds? Thanks.”

He quickly received a response that put his mind at rest. A fellow forum user said: “You can spend your money however you wish. And supporting your wife and child is totally understandable.”
Replying to the helpful posted, the grateful dad said: “Thank you. That is a massive relief.”
The gov.uk website states that Universal Credit is a payment to help people with living costs, although it doesn’t specify any rules for spending. People must report changes to their circumstances as soon as they happen, to ensure they receive the right amount each month.
