I went to a new cafe cheaper than Greggs and had the best doughnut of my life

Choosing a cafe during a trip to a town centre you’re not familiar with can be tricky. Personally, I try to avoid big chains where possible, preferring to support small, independent shops.

But with the Christmas rush, finding anywhere with a seat during my recent trip to Shrewsbury was a tricky task. However, as soon as I passed by Masovia Craft Bakery, I knew I instantly wanted to step inside.

I’d seen a post on social media about the site the day before as it had only been open for 24hrs. And walking into the space, I could not believe what I saw.

POLL: Would you feel safe travelling in a driverless shuttle?

In the first cabinet were an array of doughnuts all filled with something uniquely delicious and priced at just £1.44. This is cheaper than even Greggs where doughnuts are usually £1.50 and half the size of the ones here.

Despite there being no coffee menu, I ordered two cappuccinos, a caramel chocolate doughnut and a loaf of bread to take away and it came to just under £10. A seat in the front window opposite St Julian’s church was the icing on the cake – or doughnut – as I got to put my heavy bags down and tuck into my sweet snack.

From the first bite I could tell it was freshly made and the glaze was the perfect sweetness to offer a pick-me-up after a morning of shopping. The coffee was well sized and lovely without even the slightest hint of bitterness.

Ordering was also a quick and easy experience, with one assistant helping us choose which bread to take home based on what we like. Hearing two of the women behind the counter converse in Polish also warmed my heartstrings as I truly believe immigration is part of what makes our region so rich and welcoming.

During my time wolfing down the doughnut – which did not last long – a queue quickly formed with dozens of people keen to take away a tasty treat. Everyone was served quickly and left looking delighted at their snacks in takeaway boxed and no doubt enjoyed them at home.

There is limited seating available, but even just popping in for a cake or pastry – including an unusual looking croissant – is a must if you happen to stop by in Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury. I, for one, will certainly be back.
