Little remains today of Rubery Hill Hospital just outside of Longbridge, but it was once a large asylum on the edge of Birmingham.
Opened in 1882, it has changed its name over the years. Originally the Birmingham Borough Asylum and the First Birmingham War Hospital. It was handed over to the armed forces during both World Wars, and taken over by the NHS after WW2, finally closing in 1993.
The site laid empty for a number of years and today we know the area as Great Park where visitors can enjoy the Omniplex Cinema or Hollywood Bowl. Along with the Morrisons it has become a great destination for Brummies living south of the city.

The chapel is one of the few original building still standing today along with a few other Victoria dwellings dotted around the site. A housing estate has popped up around the area and the chapel is now smart flats.
But once upon a time patients lived here in the asylum right on the edge of Birmingham. There was plenty of land and an outdoor swimming pool for the patients to swim. We take a look through the archive at those times which seem unrecognizable today.
