An investigation has been launched after a hospital laboratory fire in West Yorkshire.
Four crews were sent out to tackle a blaze at the Pathology lab at Dewsbury and District Hospital on Tuesday, January, 14. The service was alerted to the fire by an automatic fire alarm on the building in Halifax Road.
By the time they got there, the fire had escalated and spread from the first floor to the roof voids of the building. Luckily the crews were able to extinguish the blaze and there were no reports of injuries.
Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust said: “Yesterday evening there was a fire in the pathology lab at Dewsbury and District Hospital.
“Thank you to the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews who were able to contain the fire and ensure that no one came to any harm.
“Thank you too to everyone who works at the Trust for their support and help to ensure the safety of each other.
“We don’t yet know what caused the fire but there are no indications at this stage of suspicious circumstances.
“Our teams are now working hard to make sure that we can continue to run our pathology services across the Trust as efficiently as possible.”
A West Yorkshire Fire Service spokesman said: “We were called yesterday to reports of an Automatic Fire Alarm at a building on Halifax Road.
“We sent four crews: Dewsbury (x2), Cleckheaton and Mirfield. On arrival this was a building fire on the first floor which had spread to the rood void.
“Breathing apparatus and hose reels were used by crews to extinguish the blaze.
“No reports of any injuries and Fire Investigation are looking into the cause.”
