Ipswich 2 Chelsea 0: Below-par Blues shocked by Premier League new boys

CHELSEA’S miserable festive period continued as the Blues fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Ipswich Town.

The Tractor Boys leapfrogged relegation rivals Leicester City thanks to goals from Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson.

It was Blues transfer target Liam Delap that landed the first punch when he converted a spot kick to put the home team in front after 12 minutes.

An early slip is something that this Chelsea team has seemed able to overcome this season, but the Portman Road crowd had other ideas – dragging their team over the line to see their first Premier League home win since 2002.

The anxiety of the Ipswich faithful was eased in the second half when Omari Hutchinson doubled their lead and added a cushion that put them even closer to ending their 14-year wait for three home points in the top flight.

Hutchinson tucked a tidy finish into the bottom corner to make it 2-0, and the tricky talent didn’t hold back from celebrating against his former club.

Instead he let out an acrobatic flip that was even more impressive than the goal itself.

It’s fair to say that the Portman Road crowd did have an influence from then on in, but you could probably have given Chelsea all night to try and find three goals and they wouldn’t have been able to.

The Blues could have lifted themselves back up to second place with a win, but now find themselves winless in three and in need of a shakeup.

For Ipswich, you get the feeling this could be the starting point of a spectacular battle to stay afloat in the big time.
