ITV chef James Martin shares surprise weight confession after being told he’s ‘fat’ on TV

James Martin, the celebrated TV chef, opened up about his weight struggles on a recent episode of his popular ITV show. The 52-year-old was joined by actor James Buckley and his wife Clair Meek, who are known for their podcast In Sickness and in Health, to sample some of Martin’s culinary creations.

The episode featured James preparing a sumptuous dish of blackened rice with squid, which boasted a rich blend of squid ink-infused rice, tender squid pieces, and a hidden core of garlic butter, all encased in a crispy breadcrumb coating. This was complemented by a roasted red pepper sauce and a touch of creme fraiche.

While whipping up the sauce, James remarked: “So a classic little sauce. You blend it till it is really pura but I like to leave it like that.”

He then humorously addressed the texture of the sauce, drawing a parallel to how he’s perceived, saying: “The way people describe me.. Chunky. I got told the other day, ‘You don’t look as fat as you do on TV.'”

The studio erupted into laughter as he added: “And I thought, ‘Oh that’s quite nice.’ I did try to find the complement but, you know.”

This candid moment comes after James has spoken about his challenges with sticking to a healthy diet amidst his busy work life, despite having lost an impressive three stone, reports the Express.

He shared insights into his past eating habits, revealing that during his packed schedule, which often extended late into the night, he would frequently resort to quick fixes like takeaway pizza or chocolate bars.

Martin then went on to attribute his weight loss to being a contestant on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2005, when his weight plummeted from 17st to 14st. This pivotal moment brought about a significant change to his lifestyle.

Martin turned his diet around and became committed to keeping fit through regular gym sessions at home and walking with a daily step count of between 20,000 to 30,000.

In an interview with the Leicester Mercury, Martin confessed: “Everything’s a balance – certainly as you get older with your diet. You get to 52 and you’re working in the kitchen, you run around the kitchen, [but] you’re not 22 anymore.”

He joked about the disparity between his brain’s energy and his legs’ fatigue, saying: “You’re still working the hours, your brain is telling you, but your legs are telling you otherwise.”

Reflecting on his dietary preferences, particularly his affection for cheese, Martin admitted he has found a middle ground.

James Martin Saturday Morning airs from 10am on ITV and ITVX.
