ITV Emmerdale actress Gemma Oaten has been left devastated by the untimely passing of her friend and stage co-star, Paul Hutton. The pair had appeared together in the 2018 pantomime ‘Beauty and the Beast’ at the Shaw Theatre in London, where Gemma played Belle and Paul took on the role of Silly Billy.
The 40 year old star took to Instagram to express her grief: “I can’t believe this is happening. [Paul Hutton] you were one of the best – funny, kind, caring and incredibly talented. My heart is shattered knowing you’re no longer here to brighten our lives.”
“Rest in peace, wonderful man. You will be loved forever and always.” In her post, Oaten included touching photographs of herself and Paul, reminiscing with joy about their shared moments: “This is how I remember you. Always making us smile #ForeverInOurHearts.”
Fans and friends immediately responded with condolences and memories in the comments section. One shared their experience as Paul’s dance student in the 90s, touched by his support for the underdog, while another couldn’t grasp the loss, remembering him as a vibrant character full of life, reports The Express.
A third commenter offered thoughts and prayers: “We don’t know what to say Gemma. Thinking of you in our prayers. Sending lots of love and hugs.”
Earlier this year, Paul had opened up about his struggles in a candid post, stating: “This is not a good time. I’m safe, so don’t worry, but oh my goodness life and family slap you sideways when you least expect it sometimes.”
The actor, known for his role in Billy Elliot The Musical, had also been facing challenges in his career, revealing in 2023 that he had received “five massive rejections from the theatre industry” and was even turned down for a job at a dog kennel. In a heartfelt message, Paul shared his passion for theatre, saying: “You all know how much I love theatre. I’m so passionate about it. It’s given me a lifetime of joy and I’ve met some incredible people/friends along the way.”
However, he acknowledged that the lack of work had been tough, especially living in London during difficult times, and admitted that rejection had been hitting him harder than usual. The cause of his death has yet to be confirmed.
