ITV Masked Singer fans hail ‘professional’ Jonathan Ross for ‘rescuing’ awkward interview

Jonathan Ross, a judge on The Masked Singer UK, has been lauded by ITV viewers for defusing an awkward situation during the latest episode.

Saturday night’s show saw American R&B artist Macy Gray unmasked as the performer behind the Toad in the Hole costume. However, the reveal didn’t go smoothly, with Macy initially leaving the stage when it was announced she wouldn’t be progressing to the next round of the competition.

After competing against Bear in a sing-off, Jonathan informed Macy that the judges had chosen to eliminate her because they were “pretty certain” of her identity and were “desperate” to confirm their suspicions.

Macy’s reaction to the news caused some confusion, as she abruptly left the stage, leaving presenter Joel Dommett and the judges unsure about how to proceed with the show.

Eventually, Joel reassured the audience that Toad would return to the stage for the unmasking. After removing her mask, Macy was asked by Joel about her experience on the show, reports the Manchester Evening News.

However, viewers noticed that the singer seemed less than thrilled with the outcome. When asked if she enjoyed her time on the show, Macy simply responded: “Yeah.”

Some viewers labelled her a ‘sore loser’, noting that she appeared ‘raging’ about being sent home. However, some viewers were more focused on Jonathan’s response to the awkward moment, praising the judge for his professionalism in salvaging the interview with Macy.

When Jonathan attempted to ask Macy about various clues mentioned during the show, such as her appearance on Dancing with the Stars and her song featured in Shrek, she struggled to recall the details. Despite her brief and unforthcoming answers, Jonathan persisted, inquiring about the challenges of performing while wearing a toad’s head.

Macy responded nonchalantly: “I’ve been around a long time and now I’m a toad.” This prompted Jonathan to offer an apology for having her on the show while Joel was dressed in shorts as part of his beach holiday-themed outfit.

Fans commended Jonathan for his efforts to keep the show on track, with one commenting on X (formerly Twitter ): “Jonathan Ross doing the most to keep that interview going.” Another fan observed: “Watching Jonathan Ross go into professional presenter mode to rescue the nightmare of a sulking Macy Gray, unexpected on a Saturday night.”

A third fan praised Jonathan’s composure, saying: “Outstanding from Ross when the rest of the panel completely clammed up, consummate professional.” While another echoed: “Thank god for the utter professional Mr Ross you saved the day while the other judges hid away.”

One viewer commented: “Well that was probably the most awkward unmasking to date for the #MaskedSingerUK – Macy was NOT a happy Toad! And bless him Jonathon Ross just kept asking her questions!” Another fan added their perspective, saying: “As much as Johnathan Ross annoys me – he held that tense ending together very well.” (sic)

R&B sensation Macy, known for chart-topping tracks like ‘I Try’, ‘Still’, and ‘Sweet Baby’, is familiar with the Masked Singer stage. She’s graced the Australian version in 2021 as Atlantis and made a splash in the US edition in 2023 as a wild card contestant, securing fourth place.

Earlier in the show, viewers were treated to Bear’s rendition of ‘Miami’ by Will Smith, while Bush delivered a heartfelt performance of Jess Glynne’s ‘Hold My Hand’. Pufferfish took on Cyndi Lauper’s anthem ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’, earning high praise from Maya who called it “stunning”. Wolf also hit the stage with Barry Manilow’s ‘Copacabana (At the Copa)’.

Last weekend’s reveal saw Prue Leith and Kate Garraway as the first celebrities of the season to be unveiled beneath their masks.

The Masked Singer will return next Saturday at 7pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
