ITV Vera’s Brenda Blethyn on emotional final series as she makes huge admission

ITV’s cherished series Vera, starring the esteemed Brenda Blethyn, is set to conclude its remarkable run that began in 2011. As the show nears its bittersweet end, Brenda Blethyn has been reminiscing over her extraordinary stint as the titular detective.

Acknowledging the show’s communal achievement, she gave a shout-out to the hard-working crew who have been the cornerstone of Vera’s success. Reflecting on the camaraderie and commitment on set, Brenda shared: “A number of the crew have worked on Vera since the very start along with some of the supporting artistes. They were all very loyal. There was never an ego in sight.”

Adding to this sentiment, she conveyed the pleasure of working alongside such a dedicated team: “Everyone was skilled at their job and happy to be doing it. And they were nice people. So it really was a pleasure. People just couldn’t do enough for you. Nobody was complaining. And they work so hard, the crew.”

Not only did she cherish the behind-the-scenes efforts which often went unnoticed, but she also praised those who protected her without intrusion: “I hadn’t even noticed security following me. Looking after me. They’re making sure no harm came to me as I walk out into the crowd.’ Without being in my face. Such a skill.”

Finally, she credited Vera for generating significant employment opportunities which influenced her year-to-year resolve on continuing with the series, as per reports from Chronicle Live, reports the Mirror.

The actress candidly shared her reasons for parting ways with the much-loved series, remarking: “Nobody imposed that on me. I was simply aware of it. And I knew everyone wanted to continue. I really enjoyed working on Vera and I’m not sure I’ve made the right decision even now! ” She also reflected on her family being the pivot of her decision-making process, saying: “But, I do want to spend time with my family. That’s the overriding factor in my decision-making.”

The actress showed hope for the region’s industry, adding: “I’m comforted by the fact that many of the crew live locally in the North East and, hopefully, there are lots of other jobs for them up there. Including the proposed Crown Works Studios in Sunderland which aims to create some 8000 jobs.”

As Vera gears up for its heartfelt final bow with a two-part series airing from the onset of January, fans are promised an intense experience. The opening episode ‘Inside’ sees Vera facing a critical life choice along with a pair of complex cases to solve.

The epic finale, under the cryptic title ‘The Dark Wives’, teases an intriguing narrative: “A student violently killed and dumped at the foot of three mythical monoliths and a missing girl sets Vera on an investigation that triggers memories from her own childhood.”
