James Martin’s Saturday Morning guest moans ‘you’re so slow’ as chef issues frank response

James Martin returned to ITV today with a special guest, James Buckley from The Inbetweeners, joining him in the kitchen. Buckley was accompanied by his wife Clair Meek, who joins him in their comical podcast, In Sickness and in Health.

On this morning’s edition of James Martin’s Saturday Morning, the chef whipped up what he described as a ‘hearty and warming’ beef and ale pie. The dish featured perfectly slow-cooked beef enveloped in a luxurious ale and red wine sauce and encased in a flaky golden puff pastry. Sweet, succulent carrots cooked with star anise complemented the rich pie.

While Buckley eagerly watched Martin craft the mouth-watering dish, his hunger pangs seemed to intensify – a fact made evident as he watched the food come together right before his eyes, reports the Express.

In anticipation of the feast, Martin explained: “Right, so we’re just going to take our little pie. This is our pie with our beautiful filling…”

However, Buckley, unable to contain his hunger, interrupted: “You are doing that so slow, James.” With a hint of surprise, Martin responded: “Sorry mate.”

Buckley openly confessed his impatience, stating: “I’m so hungry, I can’t wait for this. This looks absolutely amazing.”

Martin, focused on presentation, retorted: “We’ve got to make it look good for TV, you see?”

Upon completing the plating, Martin presented the aesthetically pleasing meal to his guests to the sound of applause from the camera crew, declaring: “There we have it, your first dish: meat pie and carrots.” This prompted the pair to dive in enthusiastically.

Meek was clearly thrilled, and then Buckley chimed in with another playful remark, revealing a bit of behind-the-scenes trivia about cooking shows.

“You’re not about to do that TV thing where we have a couple of bites and then you take it away from me, are you?” he queried with feigned innocence, prompting laughter from Martin.

“No,” Martin responded: “You’re left with it but yeah, that’s the puff pastry and everything else – super tasty.”

Martin assured them that what they were sampling was just the beginning, hinting at more delights to come by teasing it was “just the starter” and that they had “more coming” later on.

Among the other delectable creations whipped up by Martin on today’s programme were Welsh Rarebit with Bacon and Chutney, as well as his version of the ‘Best Ever Bacon Butty’.

As the show progressed, viewers also saw him prepare blackened rice with squid, described as ‘combines rich, squid ink-infused rice, tender squid, and a surprise garlic butter centre, all wrapped in crispy breadcrumbs’.

Accompanied by a roasted red pepper sauce and a touch of creme fraiche, the dish appeared to transport the guests to culinary nirvana.

James Martin’s Saturday Morning airs every Saturday at 9.30am on ITV.
