Jim Carrey has admitted he would be happy to stick with one role for the rest of his career after he nearly hung up his acting hat for good.
The 62-year-old Hollywood star recently scrapped his retirement plans to reprise a role that had previously lured him back to the silver screen.
He took a brief hiatus in 2014 after he featured in a sequel to Dumb and Dumber. His role in Dumb and Dumber To marked his last leading role in a comedy for six years, during which time he only made two films.
However, Carrey, who was on the brink of retirement before being offered his latest role, has indicated that there’s one franchise he would return to – and it’s not the most predictable choice.

His portrayal of Dr Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog series won over fans of all ages, and it seems to have had the same impact on Carrey.
Fans are now speculating whether the actor will ever take on another role, as he had previously announced his retirement, only to backtrack following the announcement of a third film in the series. In 2022, Carrey declared he’d “had enough” and planned to retire permanently.
His decision came shortly after the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. However, he was back on our screens just two years later in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Speaking to AP Entertainment, Carrey said: “I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
Fans are overjoyed not only by his comeback to the cinema but also his commitment to a single character. One fan expressed: “Big fan of Jim Carrey retiring and then deciding Robotnik is infinitely more important.” Another chimed in: “Honestly the fact that Jim Carrey only wants to play Doctor Robotnik nowadays is really funny.”
Previously, Carrey had stated that the only role that could lure him out of retirement would be one “written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see”.
Despite this, he starred in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 just two years later, labelling his earlier remarks about his acting future as “hyperbole”. While the Ace Ventura and The Mask actor may view his statements as “hyperbole,” others have argued that his portrayal of Dr Robotnik is as unforgettable as his finest performances.
One user commented: “It’s some of Carry’s best work. It also opens him to be remembered by kids for generations. It’s a fairly wholesome villain and he seems to be having a lot of fun. I really enjoyed him in sonic 3. The cringe was so off the chart it became great.”
Another added: “I mentioned Jim Carrey was in Sonic to my dad and he went “isn’t he retired” yeah from everything but Sonic the f**king Hedgehog.”
