Joel Dommett has shared his insights on the unexpected departure of Macy Gray from ITV’s The Masked Singer, which aired on Saturday night (January 11).
The incident unfolded after a sing-off with Bear, where the renowned 90s singer seemed visibly upset about being identified as Toad in the Hole. Judge Jonathan Ross had remarked that the panel was “pretty certain” about who was behind the mask due to the unique vocal quality, and they were “desperate” to confirm their suspicions.
Following her elimination as the third celebrity to leave the show, Macy made a swift exit from the stage, leaving the audience in a confused. She did, however, return later for the unmasking, responding to Joel’s questions with short answers.
Speaking to BBC Radio 2 on Sunday (January 12), Joel justified the judges’ choice to eliminate Toad in the Hole, pointing out that stellar singing skills don’t necessarily secure progression in the competition.

He explained to Paddy McGuinness: “This is why The Masked Singer is so good, it doesn’t matter if you’re a good singer or if you’re not, the show doesn’t sit in either camp,” He elaborated on Macy’s situation, saying: “The case with Macy is she is a legend, she has a recognisable voice and she might as well go because we all know it is her, and they put the other person through because we still don’t know who they are. If you go home early though, it is a win-win situation because you get the same money and you don’t have to do anything else.”
Joel also expressed his respect for Macy Gray and recounted the “funny” episode when she abruptly left the stage still in her costume.
Discussing the unexpected exit, the presenter said: “You can’t be vexed when you’re dressed as a toad. In my professional career – I love Macy, she is incredible, great voice – but I have never witnessed anything more funny than a 6ft toad storming off. It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.”
The situation became even more amusing when he added: “And my shorts, I suggested we make them shorter for each ad break as a joke, and they did it, and when she stormed off, I was in like hot pants.”

Joel later shared a clip of the shocking exit on Instagram, where he captioned it simply: “lol.”
Adding to the light-hearted tone, he posted a screenshot of a Daily Mail article, complete with an image of him and Macy, with him sporting the infamous stripy shorts. “My shorts make this whole article so much funnier,” Joel wrote alongside the post.
This is not Macy’s first appearance on The Masked Singer franchise. The singer previously competed in the Australian version of the show back in 2021, as well as the US version in 2023, where she made it as far as the final.
