Joel Dommett has shared his insights into the moment Macy Gray abruptly left The Masked Singer stage on Saturday night (January 11).
The incident occurred after Macy Gray, the 90s music legend, faced off against Bear in the sing-off and seemed visibly upset upon being unveiled as Toad in the Hole. Jonathan Ross commented that the judges were “pretty certain” about Toad’s identity due to their unique voice and were “desperate” to confirm their suspicions.
Following her elimination as the third celebrity to leave the show, Macy quickly exited the stage, leaving the audience puzzled. She did return for the unmasking but responded to Joel’s questions with brief one-word answers.
Speaking to Paddy McGuinness on BBC Radio 2 the next day (January 12), Joel explained the judges’ choice to eliminate Toad in the Hole, pointing out that a strong singing ability doesn’t always keep you in the competition.

“This is why The Masked Singer is so good, it doesn’t matter if you’re a good singer or if you’re not, the show doesn’t sit in either camp,” he shared. “The case with Macy is she is a legend, she has a recognisable voice and she might as well go because we all know it is her, and they put the other person through because we still don’t know who they are. If you go home early though, it is a win-win situation because you get the same money and you don’t have to do anything else.”
Joel also expressed his respect for Macy and recounted the “funny” episode when she stormed off the stage still in her costume.
“You can’t be vexed when you’re dressed as a toad. In my professional career – I love Macy, she is incredible, great voice – but I have never witnessed anything more funny than a 6ft toad storming off. It’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” he said. “And my shorts, I suggested we make them shorter for each ad break as a joke, and they did it, and when she stormed off, I was in like hot pants.”
The host later hopped onto Instagram to share the amusing scene with a simple “lol” in the caption, also posting a Daily Mail screenshot that displayed him beside Macy, rocking stripy shorts.
“My shorts make this whole article so much funnier,” Joel quipped on his Instagram post.
Macy, prior to her appearance on The Masked Singer UK, had already taken part in the Australian version of the show in 2021 and won a spot in the finals of the American series in 2023.
