Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway had to briefly interrupt the show on Thursday when an unexpected wardrobe malfunction occurred with guest Martin Clunes. In the middle of the programme, 57 year old Kate and her co-host Ed Balls were ready to discuss Martin’s new ITV thriller, ‘Out There’, but before they could dive into the conversation, Martin, aged 63, was caught on camera fiddling with his attire.
This led Kate to joke: “He’s just worrying about his clothes. By the way, he’s falling apart! ” She added humorously: “At least it’s just your clothes, for me, it’s the actual body, Martin, so be grateful! ” Widely recognised for his roles in ‘Men Behaving Badly’ and ‘Doc Martin’, Martin is now exploring fresh ground with ‘Out There’, as reported by the Manchester Evening News. The synopsis for the drama outlines a gripping narrative: “County lines drug dealing and its escalating, insidious crime wave sweeping the British countryside is the subject of new six-part ITV and ITVX drama, Out There, starring Martin Clunes, as a farmer confronted with dark forces creeping into his rural community.”
The drama portrays the stealthy encroachment upon the land treasured by our farmer protagonist, bringing catastrophic effects as his livelihood, home, and family life are imperilled by local county lines drug dealers – urban gangs that exploit the countryside as an operational field, shuttling drugs and cash between city centres and rural outposts.
In the gripping drama, Martin stars as Nathan Williams, a hardened farmer whose life is rooted in his family’s land through generations. Mourning the loss of his wife Sabine, Nathan grapples with the dual challenges of running a farm and raising his teenage son Johnny alone, a role taken on by Louis Ashbourne Serkis.
A sneak peek into the series suggests a tense narrative: “Nathan is uniquely placed and possesses enough pent-up energy to take on the gangs that threaten to engulf his son.”, reports Somerset Live.
“Consequently, he embarks on a personal journey that will take him ever further out of his comfort zone into a dark alternative world as he fights to protect his family, his homestead and his legacy.”
The teaser hints at a countryside corrupted by crime: “He’s missed all the clues that the country idyll around him has been fatally compromised, contaminated by waves of criminality spreading and mutating virus-like from the city.”
It continues, “Now Nathan must accept that the rustic atmosphere of his childhood is long gone, replaced by something altogether more perilous. And the only way for Nathan to survive in this brave new world is to learn the rules and fight back.”
Fans can catch the premiere of Out There on ITV at 9pm, Sunday 19 January, with the series also dropping in full on ITVX the same day.
