A man has been arrested following a disturbance at a flat in Birkenhead this afternoon. At around 12.45pm today, Monday, December 30, police received a report that a man was assaulted by another man and a woman was forcefully removed from a flat on Hamilton Street.

The woman was able to break free and run back to the flat but the man followed her, police said. Officers were punched, kicked and bitten by the suspect before he was successfully detained.A 32-year-old man from Leasowe has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, burglary, three counts of common assault of emergency worker, and kidnap. He is still in police custody to be questioned.Detective Inspector Andrew Schofield said: “Four of the officers who attended the incident were themselves assaulted while carrying out their duties. I’m sure the vast majority of law-abiding members of the public would agree that assaults on police officers or other emergency workers is totally unacceptable.“Our officers turn up to work every single day to keep the communities of Merseyside safe. They know they may face unpredictable and sometimes dangerous situations, but they never, ever deserve to be treated in this way.“I’m pleased to see that – despite coming under attack from the suspect – the officers on duty were able to detain him and bring the incident to a safe conclusion. My message to those who carry out violence against police is this: please remember, one day you or your families may need our help too. If anyone crosses that line, they can expect to face the full force of the law.”
