Kirklees Council earmarks 30 more assets for disposal in latest fire sale

From community centres to local pubs, Kirklees Council has announced 30 more assets it wants to get rid of in a bid to bring in some much-needed cash.

As the council looks ahead to the next financial year facing a budget gap of £29.3m, more buildings and land are set to be sold off, a report to next week’s Cabinet meeting reveals. The local authority is hoping to bring in £6m by offloading these newly-announced sites, along with others which have already been earmarked.

Among those set to be sold is the site of the former Gomersal First School which is the only one with its own, separate recommendation to Cabinet. The council’s plans to dispose of it were advertised with one objection received from a member of the public. However, officers have advised that this be dismissed.

Members will be asked to approve plans to sell the assets listed below. The listings in bold are where the tenant wishes to purchase the council’s freehold interest. The proposed method of disposal for the remainder have not yet been made clear.
