Little-known button on your washing machine could save money on your bills

Britons are being warned of a little-known setting on their washing machine that could actually save money on their energy bills.

Recent research indicates that a significant number of people have difficulty mastering their domestic devices, often relying on the same setting for every wash. A study involving 2,000 adults conducted by Utilita Energy revealed compelling insights, as reported by the Daily Mail.

A staggering 59 percent confessed to defaulting to their machine’s “quick wash” option. Yet, gaining a better understanding of what the different settings mean could benefit consumers financially.

Utilita points out that turning your washing machine to its eco mode, a setting commonly misunderstood, could be an easy way to cut costs. The company suggests that there is a common misconception that the eco mode leads to higher expenses, whereas it might actually do the reverse.

While it may consume more time, the eco mode is noted for its superior energy efficiency. Nonetheless, approximately 77 percent of participants stated they steer clear of this option, with around half deterred by the longer duration of the cycle, reports the Mirror

A spokesperson from Utilita Energy, the organisation behind the survey, commented: “Kitchen appliances are designed to make life easier, but for many, the endless buttons, settings and features can feel overwhelming. It’s no surprise that so many end up using the same setting time and time again.”

“We’re aware that the ‘eco’ mode has been confused for an ‘ecology’ mode, which people assume is high cost for the pocket, but low cost for the environment. Using the right settings can reduce energy consumption, cut waste, and improve efficiency… Small changes in how we use our appliances can lead to big savings over time.”

But it’s not only washing machines causing a stir of confusion among Britons. Features like the de-scaling function on coffee machines were also identified as perplexing when it comes to kitchen appliance usability.

People are similarly puzzled by the filter clean option on vacuum cleaners, often leaving them bewildered. Dishwashers too present challenges, with a large number of individuals admitting to using consistent settings to avoid any mix-up.

Whilst being noted as one of the most baffling household items, washing machines are also presumed to be among the top users of household energy. Reports from Consumer Reports indicate they account for approximately four percent of domestic electricity usage.

Energy company E.On says nearly 90 percent of a washing machine’s energy is expended on heating the water, suggesting Brits might consider cooler cycles to cut back on costs, as many contemporary detergents are effective at just 30c.

However, they advise that eco mode may not always be the best choice for smaller loads under 4kg. Instead, opting for a rapid cycle could be more beneficial for single or smaller batches of laundry, potentially conserving both time and energy.
