Flood warnings and alerts are in place across Lancashire as 2025 gets off to a very wet start.
The region has been impacted by a deluge of rain over the past 24 hours leaving homes flooded and roads underwater. The Met Office has issued amber and yellow weather warnings for rain and said ‘fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life’.
A total of 24 ‘act now’ flood warnings and nine ‘be prepared’ flood alerts remain in place on New Year’s Day with areas including Preston, Rossendale, Clitheroe, Garstang and Lancaster worst affected. The Environment Agency said high river levels overnight are causing flooding in some areas as the rain continues.
Several major roads, including Whalley Road in Sabden and Bilsborrow Lane in Inglewhite, have been shut due to flooding while the downpours also caused disruption on the M65 on New Year’s Eve. Elsewhere in the region, the M57 is closed in both directions while flooding has also closed the M56 westbound from J6 to J7 and shut several lanes on the M6 in Cheshire.
