Live weather updates as Lancashire hit by blanket of snow overnight

Lancashire has woken up to a blanket of snow as temperatures plummeted overnight.

Snow is expected to lead to disruption today across northern England, with some rural communities set to be cut off. Power cuts are also expected and mobile phone coverage will be affected.

The Met Office has also issued an amber weather warning for snow across the region tonight.

The adverse weather conditions will also affect travel, with some delays on the roads and cancellations to rail and air travel. The warning was also in place yesterday (Saturday, January 4) from 9-11.39pm.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is also in place for England, which starts at 12pm today and will last until tomorrow (Monday, January 6).

The Met Office states: “Snow will reach the south of the warning area later Saturday, then spread north across the rest of the area through Sunday morning. Snow will be persistent and heavy at times, and will likely drift in brisk easterly winds, especially over higher ground.

“Much of the warning area can expect 3-7 cm of snow. Areas above about 150 m will likely see 15-30 cm, with 40 cm for ground above 300 m, before snow begins to ease and clear by the end of Sunday. For some lower-lying areas, such as the Vale of York, snow may mix with rain at times making estimations of snow depths here more difficult. Regardless, travel will likely be difficult, with power line icing an additional impact.”
