M20 Junction 1 closure dates announced for safety upgrades

The previously cancelled closure of junction 1 on the M20 has been rescheduled.

It was closed previously due to storm warnings.

The motorway will now be closed in both directions between the slip roads from 10pm on Friday, January 17, until 5.30am on Monday, January 20, to facilitate safety improvements.

More than 350 metres of central reservation safety barrier will be upgraded to enhance safety for road users and reduce future maintenance requirements.

Amelia Yeodal, National Highways programme development manager, said: “Our work here will improve safety for those using this section of the M20.

“Completing this safety upgrade over the weekend, when traffic levels are lower, is the most effective way to do that.

“We appreciate people’s understanding and patience while we do this and would just remind road users to allow extra time to complete their journeys if they are travelling in this area over the weekend.”

During the closure, traffic on the M20 will be redirected via the exit and entry slip roads.

Signals at the Swanley Interchange will be adjusted and monitored to maintain traffic flow.
