Main Birmingham road closed for hours as two-car crash sees woman rushed to hospital

A main road in Birmingham had to close for several hours after a two-car crash left a woman with ‘serious injuries’. The crash took place on the A435 Haden Way in Balsall Heath shortly before 11.30am on Wednesday (January 7) involving a white Toyota, believed to be a taxi and a blue car.

The road was closed in both directions between Haden Circus and Moseley Road leading to traffic congestion and ‘major disruption’. West Midlands Ambulance Service sent four crews to the scene – an ambulance, paramedic officer, MERIT (Medical Emergency Response Intervention Team) trauma doctor and critical care paramedic.

They found a woman had suffered ‘potentially serious injuries’ and she was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Selly Oak. A man was also treated for minor injuries but discharged at the scene.

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A435 Haden Way in Birmingham at 11.24am on Wednesday. On arrival, crews discovered two cars had been involved in a collision.

“A woman was treated by ambulance staff for potentially serious injuries before being conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. A second patient, a man, was treated for minor injuries before being discharged at the scene.”

The road was closed for ‘accident investigation work’ but reopened a little over two hours later at around 1.35pm with congestion then easing in the area. West Midlands Police has been approached for a statement.
