Major athletics company and man charged with causing death of Paralympian

A man and a business have been charged in connection with the death of a Paralympian. Abdullah Hayayei died during a 2017 training incident. An investigation was launched by police after emergency services responded to reports of a seriously injured man who had been struck on the head by a metal pole during a training.

The incident occurred at Newham Leisure Centre in Prince Regent Lane on Tuesday, July 11 2017. The man, Abdullah Hayayei, 36, a United Arab Emirates athlete, was pronounced dead at the scene. On Tuesday, January 7 UK Athletics Limited – the national governing body for athletics – was charged with corporate manslaughter and offences under Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Also charged was Keith Davies, of Bushwood, Leytonstone. The 77-year-old was also head of sport for the 2017 World Paralympic Athletics Championships and was charged on Monday, January 6 with gross negligence manslaughter as well as offences under Section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Both parties are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, January 31.
