A man has been charged with dangerous driving and assault following a hit-and-run that injured two people in London on New Year’s Day. Police were called to the incident just after midnight on January 1 after reports of a vehicle crashing into a pedestrian.
Daniel Sterling, 40, has also been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to provide a drug test, possession of a knife in a public place, and a racially aggravated public order offence.
The incident occurred at the junction of Regent’s Park Road and Primrose Hill in north London. Metropolitan Police said the driver failed to stop and continued along Primrose Hill Road where a second pedestrian was struck.
A 21-year-old man suffered minor injuries that did not require medical treatment. And the second pedestrian, a 59-year-old man, was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital where his injuries were assessed as non-life-changing.
Sterling, of Well Walk in Camden, is due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court today (January 2).
As previously reported by MyLondon, a Met Police spokesperson said: “At 12.13am on Wednesday, January 1, a vehicle was involved in a collision with a pedestrian at the junction of Regent’s Park Road and Primrose Hill Road. The driver failed to stop at the scene, making off along Primrose Hill Road where a second pedestrian was struck.
“Officers who were in the area as part of the New Year’s Eve policing operation located the vehicle a short distance away at the junction of Primrose Hill Road and King Henry’s Road. The driver, a 40-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, causing grievous bodily harm and possession of controlled drugs.
“The pedestrian who was initially struck, a 21-year-old man, sustained minor injuries that did not require medical treatment. The second pedestrian who was struck, a 59-year-old man, was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital where his injuries were assessed as non-life changing.
“An investigation is underway. This is not being treated as a terrorist incident.”
