Man failed to show up for jury duty and could now end up in prison himself

Marian-Catalin Udrea was fined £1,000 by a judge and faces a prison sentence if he doesn’t pay up

Liverpool Crown Court

A man who failed to show up for jury duty could now end up in prison himself. Marian-Catalin Udrea was summonsed to serve as a juror at Liverpool Crown Court over the course of two weeks, beginning on December 2 last year, but did not attend on this date.

The court was subsequently unable to make contact with him, leading to him being warned to attend court this morning, Friday, in order to show cause for his absence. However, he failed to appear once again today.

Udrea, who is from the L4 area, was therefore fined £1,000 by the Honorary Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC. He was given 56 days to pay this sum, and will face 28 days in jail in default if he fails to do so.

The same judge told another man who similarly failed to show for duty and to appear the court to explain his absence in 2024: “He has not attended, nor has he provided any information at all as to why he is absent.

“In this situation, I cannot assume there is any mitigation. He has provided no information as to his means. There is no reason available why he should not be fined the maximum amount of £1,000.”
