Manze’s Pie and Mash Deptford to close this January

A statement on Manze’s website confirmed that the business will close its doors on January 25, following an earlier announcement in January 2024 that the business would close later the following year.

Owner George Mascall, 65, said that the business would close due to his retirement this year.

George told Southwark News last year that he wouldn’t be “getting the bunting out” but added he’d “had enough of making pies.”

The family-run business of over 100 years was originally founded by the late Michael Manze, who passed away in September 2022, before being taken over by daughter Sheila Mascall up until she passed away, aged 91.

In the 1930s, the family ran thirteen pie and mash shops across London, including Peckham, and are still run by relatives of George to this day.

The Grade II listed building has been a recognisable feature of the high street since 1914, and even served as a filming location for an episode of BBC1 comedy show Back to Life as well as Only Fools and Horses spin-off Rock and Chips.

The shop was initially founded sometime between 1890 and 1914, before being taken over by Michael, who moved to London from Italy.

It is not yet clear what will become of the building following the business’ closure next month, according to a statement on the website, which also confirmed that other family members were in established careers and had “no interest in the business.”

Anyone looking to get a final pie with lashings of liquor at this popular spot can visit the business up until January 25, which will mark their last day of trading.

A statement on the Manze’s website read: “We expect to be very busy in the lead up to our last days.

“Please make sure you get in pronto for your visit, we are selling out much earlier in the day than normal and I don’t want you to be disappointed and miss out on your last pie & mash.”
